ScubaJim... You, my dear, are an asshole! Who the hell are you to tell someone what they can and cannot share with people...? Yes! That's what I thought...NO ONE!

You, however, feel the responsibility to change someone's feelings. Just because you do not have the depth as a person to understand the correlation of diving and life, well, then you are the idiot!

Do yourself a favor and don't allow yourself to comment on anything ever again. You are embarrassing yourself. Perhaps you are the exact person who should actually take something away from this blog.. Stop being so angry...

I have to say I'm a little concerned with your intent to lighten the situation. You continually try to reinforce to the reader that you are ok and that decisions your about to make mirror the decisions you struggle with in your daily life. You really need to separate the two. You can make the best or worst decisions in your life but you shouldn't use that to correlate to a dangerous dive scenario. Your dive experience and training were much more important to your survival in that situation than conflicts in your daily life. I found your story very disturbing and I hope other divers try to learn more about dive training and when to call a dive "just say no" and be safe. Did this really happen? Are you simply trying to add drama or emotion to a dangerous scenario? Diving is not about learning or comparing life experiences. Don’t try to draw readers to your blog. You appear to have something to offer to new divers. Save the soap opera approach for day time TV.

What a great blog, it once again shows the trend that far too many people are taking, "it's never my fault, it must be someone else's". When will people start taking responsibility for their own actions?

The only thing you should let go of is your non-existent dive buddy. Where was your primary back-up and support during this? Did he or she actually make the dive while you were in distress?

The dive was poorly planned. That current should have called for a drifting drop/deco, or cancellation. Going up and down a line in a 2kt current (that is HUGE) can result in exhaustion, gas depletion, lost masks and a host of other problems.

But, WHERE WAS YOUR BUDDY? If I had been your buddy, you would not have had to go it alone, you can be sure.

I'm glad you made the right decision. Not just by letting go of the line at the stern of the boat, but also by calling the dive when you realised conditions were unpleasantly rough. That can be a tough call when you're with friends and diving spouse. Cudos.

Your blog is one of the best essays on self controle, self reliance, and how to make good decisions while living and just diving. I hope that men don't think this kind of adult thinking is limited to "girls".

I have too often seen men make decisions to stick with it rather than "wimp" out. I've been in the dive business for over 50 years. The hardest lesson for most men to grasp is the concept of diving within your comfort zone. It's ok to test the limits with baby steps and training. It's also ok to back out of previously concurred situations when they don't seem right.

Thanks for sharing your experience and maturity.
